Lets Get Tweaking
This is the easiest way of tweaking Quake 3 to give you more frames per second so the game runs at a steady 125 frames per second. What we are going to do is set the game up using the setup options in game no messing about with cfg or autoexec.cfg files here just turning the graphics settings down etc.
From the main Quake III menu above select the "setup" option, on doing so you will be presented with the menu below.
From this menu (The Setup Menu) all the menus we need are selected, from this menu select Games Options on doing so the menu below is displayed for the best frames per second adjust as shown below then click on the Back Button to save your new settings.
Your now back at the (The Setup Menu) from here select SYSTEM and you will be presented with the menu below. For the best frames per second adjust as shown below then click on the Accept Button to save your new settings.
Go back to the menu above and from here select Sound and you will be presented with the menu below. For the best frames per second adjust as shown below then click on the back Button to save your new settings. When changing the sound to low the game may restart.
Go back to the menu above and from here select Network and you will be presented with the menu below. For the best basic connection adjust as shown according to your connection type if your using a modem select 28.8k 33.6k or 56k for ISDN select ISDN for ADSL/LAN select ADSL/LAN then click on the back Button to save your new settings.
Ok thats it the basic tweaking is done yes it does not look pretty any more just a couple of things left to do we need to enter a couple of commands in the console its easy.
Start Q3 then press the tilde key (strange name hey) its the one below the ESC or escape key. Pressing the tilde key will bring down the console and allow you to enter commands.
Lets enter our first command to see how it works run Quake III bring down the console by pressing the tilde key and type in \set cg_drawfps 1 press enter. This command turns the frames per second display on or off to turn it off type \set cg_drawfps 0.
The next command to enter is \com_maxfps 125 this will cap your frame rate at 125 frames per second theres no need for any more frames per second when playing on-line
to uncap enter \com_maxfps 0. For more advanced tweaking see autoexec.cfg files.
