Getting ADSL

Getting ADSL

Fed up with your modem ISDN not cutting it anymore and you feel the need for speed. Then ADSL could be the answer to your prayers. ADSL is now available to 99% of the population of the UK and the percentage is rising monthly. To check to see if you can get ADSL Click here.
I Can Get ADSL What Now
Before installing ADSL think about the hardware you require. The number of computers sharing your ADSL connection. If your connecting more than one computer a router will be required if your using a single computer an internal PCI ADSL modem will do. Free USB ADSL modems are given away by some ISPs or sold cheaply.

Options Open To You
You`ve thought about the hardware you need now its just a case of matching that up to an ISP who can meet your requirements.
  • Walk into PC World/Dixons and come out with a broadband box containing all you need to get on-line using ADSL or phone up the respective ISP and they will send you a broadband box. ISPs offering this service include Freeserve,AOL,btyahoo. You will have to arrange a day for your phone line to be activated by BT so you can receive the ADSL service this is done via your ISP. This is the most expensive way of getting ADSL costs about £27.99 - £30 a month for 512kbs service and as a minimum one year contract but usually you get free modem cost £50 free activation cost £50 free filters £8 each.

  • Wires only ADSL, not all ISPs offer this service but its more flexible than above in that you can use your own hardware. Only one months contract is needed but you normally have to pay for line activation £50 modem £50 Filters £8 each. The monthly cost is lower £19 - £24.

  • Iv`e got ISDN/Home Highway. The minimum term for Home Highway is one years contract so if your year is up you need to get Home Highway removed or a safer option is to go for a managed conversion. A BT engineer calls turns off your ISDN lines. Then calls at your house removes the Home Highway box and replaces it at its location with a master socket face plate. The engineer does some tests returns to the exchange and activates your line for ADSL. On his return the engineer will give you a demonstration of ADSL say thanks for all the tea and leave you very happy. The managed conversion will cost you £50 on your phone bill but if for some reason you can`t get ADSL BT won`t charge you and replace the Home Highway box and turn ISDN Back on.

  • Iv`e got Home Highway and I still have months left of my contract. Here you have two options one Pay the outstanding balance on the contract then go for a managed conversion this will be very expensive. Option two btyahoo are offering to pay the outstanding balance on your Home Highway contract pay for managed conversion and give you a free USB modem just sign up with them for a years contract.

  • Before installing ADSL think about the hardware you require. The number of computers sharing your ADSL connection. If your connecting more than one computer a router will be required if your using a single computer an internal PCI ADSL modem will do.
