Since its release Quake 3 has had many different updates or point releases.
What this means is theres lots of Quake 3 servers running the old versions or point releases of Quake 3 from 1.11 to 1.32 final.
Any servers running point releases above or below the one your using and you can`t play on them. This is where the version or point release changer comes in. The version or point release changer allows you to change your version or point release between 1.16 to 1.32 or protocol versions 43 to 68. Confused don`t worry its not hard honest.
How can you tell what version or point release a server is running. I use the All Seeing Eye server finder and in the bottom right hand corner is the server info. When you click on a server name the server details including point release and protocol versions are displayed there.
Installing And Using OFx Q3 Version Switch
First you need to download and install OFx Q3 Version Switch to do that click on the button below
After downloading follow the instuctions given by the installer and change the install directory if Quake 3 is not installed in the default directory. If you don`t understand the last sentence just install it I am sure it will work.
After OFx Q3 Version Switch has been installed look in your Quake 3 directory the default path is C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena and you will see the icon below. This is the version switch if your going to be using it alot make a shortcut and place it on the desktop.
Theres two ways you can use OFx Q3 Version Switch run OFx Q3 Version Switch enter the ip address of the server and select the point release version for it. Theres also a password box enter the password if the server is password protected and a command line box here you can enter console commands eg com_maxfps 125. Click on set and launch and this will set your copy of Quake 3 permanently to that point release version and connect to server.
Run OFx Q3 Version Switch select the point release version you wish to run click on set and exit this will change your copy of Quake 3 permanently to that point release version you selected.
